Mobile Simulation Lab

In 2011, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommended that simulations be used as an effective education strategy to increase positive maternal and child outcomes. Simulations allow for providers to receive targeted training exercises in a controlled, yet realistic environment. The providers can gain experience with uncommon clinical conditions and infrequently preformed procedures. However, simulation training has been primarily used for emergency department personnel and residents rather than EMS providers.

The research team contracted with WakeMed Center for Innovative Learning to provide simulated training to participating EMS providers. WakeMed became the first in the region to obtain a simulation ambulance that functions as a real ambulance, allowing simulation training to happen while the vehicle is moving. The simulation ambulances are equipped with recording capabilities providing monitoring and debriefing of the skills lab experience.

WakeMed has significant experience teaching EMS and other healthcare providers how to perform emergency services for obstetric and pediatric services. Staff operating the mobile simulation lab are trained in management and education of the simulation lab and will be scheduled to visit all participating EMS Systems. Pediatric and obstetric simulations will have set presentations which will rotate throughout each year. The obstetric and pediatric conditions used in the simulations will be created based on overall knowledge deficits of EMS providers.
